Risk Takers
I laugh at the people who say they don’t like to take risks. The ones that insist on a certain belief system that they have somehow come to believe and live by day in, day out. The ones that come to banks and say we want low risk investments. The ones that never go out of the ordinary and tread on the normal pathways of earth. The ones that drive safe. The non smokers. The no airplane people. No fun in the sun, swim in the sea knock offs.
Many people believe that they are no or low risk takers. They know nothing!
If you analyze your daily life movements and actions you will come to believe that you are one crazy, lunatic, mad risk taker.
The moment you wake up in the morning or go to sleep at night you are at 100% risk. Its a game of statistics that can play in your favor or against you. You can wake up and fall on the bathroom floor and break your back or neck, or you can sleep and never wake up by choking to death. Scary huh?
Well thank God life is much more kinder than that on humans. We are a tough species.
- The day you learnt to drive, your chances of dying in a car accident increased 100% over your friend that never learnt to drive.
- The raw sushi & sashimi you eat with all its fame & glory can get you to a hospital faster than a speeding bullet if it was rotten, how would you ever know? you trust the sushi place for having fresh fish, that’s how.
- You go to have a botox injection( I am too lazy to check the spelling, Im sure one of the girls/boys will help with this one) to fade away those aging lines and look younger, they ask you if you want to go under anesthesia during the operation, you accept.Let me rephrase that, They ask you if you want to go unconscious under a drug, so they can operate on you without you knowing anything, you might come to, and you might not. You ask me to stop scaring you? you do sign a paper that the hospital is not responsible for you if something goes wrong don’t they?how scary is that?? yet you accept the risk.
- You cross the road every day, hoping that no one will be a lunatic and run you over.
- You go to work in a safety standard environment and forget that the contractor could have sacrificed on the material of the whole building, yet you go daily.
- You drive with your safety belt on, you drive within the set speed limits, you go by the book, and you know that there are a million maniac drivers, some drunk drivers, some brainless teenagers on a joy ride, running red lights in big SUV’s at race level speeds, yet you drive on.
- You use your mobile unit more than you use your brain, you talk and talk till the battery dies, you have heard of the batteries that exploded before, that won’t happen to me we think, yet we blabber away.
- You buy the safest anti virus software and update it automatically and pay away, month after month, and governments get hacked, and still you sign up to that Bank account online and show your finances to the world.
- We buy products day in day out, we hear that water gets contaminated, food gets poisoned, medicine gets tampered with on its way to a shelf near you, and we still shop online.
- The people using protection know that there is a slight possibility of catching a disease or getting someone pregnant, yes its small, but its a risk? so do you continue taking this risk? or become a priest and vow never to get near a female again due to the risk factor? or just take the whole nine yards and go with the flow? people make sacrifices, sometimes in the wrong areas.
- You plug that electrical appliance and you are oh so sure it wont electrify you, you stand in the shower all wet, get down on the marble floor and head to your shaver and plug it, is that insane or normal? you change the lightbulb and think its safe, what about those long ones that explode when they fall to the ground?
You have all these crazy ideas going for you and you call yourself a no risk person, a low risk individual, a medium risk taker, a 100% guarantee buyer. There are no guarantees in life, so why the hassles?
Enough said. Risk is a part of our lives, we live it and we take it daily like vitamins. Stop the whining and move out of your comfort zone that you hide behind calling it names like risk appetite and risk tolerance and sometimes calculated risk.
The last one is a favorite amongst Investors and business people, I am also a big fan, calculated risk, what risk are you wiling to take for the final prize? should you take it or not? that’s another thing.
You know the famous High Risk High Reward saying, its true you know. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose, when you win, make those winnings BIG and add some spice in your life, go out and have fun, enjoy the good times.
If I had to do it all again, I would take more risk, and higher reward pots. Even though I am known for my high risk attitude and lifestyle, I still know deep down there is much more risk that needs addressing. I also know that where I am today is due to the many risky roads I travelled and watched people standing on the pavements saying “ there goes that crazy man again with his wild ideas and lifestyle changes” I guess Chris Columbus didn’t think of what people thought of his travel ideas to make his thoughts more thoughtful and meaningful!
Go out today and do something that scares you. Do something that makes your adrenaline levels sky rocket out of the roof, look RISK in the eyes and dare it, go totally ballistic and take a bit of risk, go ahead now, make hat decision you have been putting off for so long due to non-risk-appetite tolerance levels.
Remember risk takers don’t have a certain look about them, they are normal you & me’s walking and living amongst us, they dive, bunjee jump, sky dive, ski, water ski, play football and rugby, race cars, have wild relationships hoping for the best, they try that new dish on the menu, they basically have more fun.
Take a walk on the wild side, forget managing your risk and show it what it means to be a risk taker, you take the risk, enjoy the outcome, positive or negative, its all good for the heart ;P
” If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair. We’d never have a relationship. We’d never go into business, because we’d be too cynical. Well, that’s nonsense. You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time to build your wings on the way down.” Annie Dillard.
