Fatal Assumptions

His manager calls him into his office, tells him to close the door and have a seat, he is in despair, what did he do? he knew the company was downsizing and he was comforted a few months ago.
He was now going over his life, his wife, his two kids, his loans for the new house, his credit cards, his children’s schools, his parents payments he was looking after. He could see that look in his managers eyes, that look he saw when 3 of his friends entered this very room and left the building forever, he was now breaking a sweat, his manager was busy on the phone, but never stopped giving him that weird look that managers seem to give, he goes back to the after shock effect on himself and his family and friends.
The manager puts down the phone and looks him straight in the eyes, he stares a bit, then uncovers a piece of paper, looks at it, stands up and moves towards him, very slow, too slow, its all in slow motion now. he extends the piece of paper in one hand and suddenly a smile on his managers face so vibrant appears and disappears in a second, he gets closer and grabs him closer and whispers something in his ears which he does not get? He starts to mutter back at his manager” But I worked hard and stayed late, I delivered everything you asked me to produce and some more! How can you let me go? Why were there no warnings? please explain to me, for I have some explaining to do to my family” “ I am sure you do have some explaining and boasting to do my dear friend, I must let you go, for you are now our new CEO! Congratulations son, I wish you all the best on your new position and hope you take care of everyone in this company”
He had been waiting for this day for the last 4 years, his hard work and determination had finally paid off. His management had been noticing his efforts and had all agreed it was time to choose the next CEO of the company, he never knew what was happening. He suddenly starts a hysterical laugh that cracks the silence in the offices, he now knows the true meaning of ASSUME( don’t make an Ass out of U & Me) he had assumed the worst and got the best, he was glad he was wrong!
He walked faster than he usually does, he was obviously in a hurry. He just left work and was heading for the nearest main street to catch the places before they close, his boss just didn’t let go of him till late in the night. He had many missed calls and messages pending dying for attention, he never could answer, he was the spotlight at work that day, he wanted to surprise her.
He was running to get his wife a gift from cartier, a beautiful diamond watch she was eyeing for the last year.
She is angrier than ever, she has lost her mind, the timing was always lousy with her husband, her angry attitude was being released by the minute, she never knew he would do this to her again, her friends were on her side, as usual. Comforting her in a way that made her know he was up to no good, as if she needed them now.
She was always on his back but loved him so much, she was always his baby, always his lover, she always had his back, she believed in him, he knew it and tried harder to please he, deep down she knew it but rarely showed it
Lately she was really not helping him, it had been a year or so now, she suspected he was in the office, always calling him, disturbing him, taking his words for granted, trying to act as she believes his stories, always running to her crew for back up, she never showed him what he was to her until late in the week, when she would be all alone with him.
She would never give him that hug he always wanted, all because one of her friends had caught her husband cheating on her, married and had 3 kids in the dark. This friend had vowed to spell her curse on all men through the grape vine of married friends for as long as she lived, she won some and lost some. This wife was a follower of her preaching, he was a true love, a true husband by all means, a true friend, a benchmark for a fighter, he had nothing but his family on his mind.
She was getting crazier as I said before by the minute, she was losing it, she was just about to call the driver to get the car ready(a brand new mercedes he had bought her a few months ago, he still drives his 5 year old american SUV) but called one more time to make sure.
This was her 10th call and 8th message, he just ignored her today. How could he, the cheat, the liar, the typical man, she said all men were the same after a certain age, they all change as they grow and become more important in life!
She calls the number one more time, the phone picks up and it seems there is the sound of people and a crowd of people! I knew it she thinks,” Hello!,Hello! Answer me! where have you been? how could you avoid me? speak up! Hello!”
He whispers back” I lo…ve you honey….” “ Why are you speaking to me in a low tone, speak up, who is with you??” “ I love you honey…take care of the ….kids…”
“ Who is this?” another voice screams through the phone. “ Who are you?!?” She screams back. “ This is the captain Ahmed from the traffic police madame, are you his wife? I think you should come or bring someone with you to the following street as fast as you can…
She arrives in total panic with her brother to the scene, cars, ambulances, more people, it is a disaster area. She makes her way through the crowd, her veil drops without her noticing, she sees her husbands car wrapped around a bent road lamp, barely identifying it, blood everywhere, people make way.
She finally sees a white blanket covered body, and her husbands hand with a watch she bought him on his last birthday apparent grabbing a little red bag, she sits
down beside him, uncovers the white cover to make sure its not him, she breaks down in total disbelief.
The small card attached to the little red box read
” Honey, I never meant to be far away from you, I promise you this will be my last day I ever miss a date with you, I love you, baby, I finally made it, thank you for standing by my side, the world is ours, I love you…”
She looks up to the sky and whispers “ one more chance…that’s all please…”
